Bears Sign Gymnast for Next Season

Dec. 5, 2006

BERKELEY - California men's gymnastics coach Barry Weiner announced that Kyle Bunthuwong, brother of current Golden Bear gymnast, Kyson Bunthuwong, has signed a letter of intent and will join Cal next season.

Bunthuwong, a native of El Cerrito, has been a long-time member of the U.S. junior national team. In addition, he is also a four-time junior national parallel bar champion. Bunthuwong is currently being coached by two-time NCAA high bar champion and Cal alumnus, Michael Ashe.

"Kyle is an incredible gymnast with great potential and will provide even more depth on what will be a deep and talented team next season," Coach Weiner said.

The signing of Bunthuwong could help put the Bears over the top. Last season, Cal finished fifth in the NCAA Championships and third in the MPSF Championships. The 2006 season saw a champion crowned for the Bears, as junior Tim McNeill won the NCAA title on pommel horse in the NCAA individual meet.
