Cal Holds Third Place at Western Intercollegiate

March 26, 2008

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The California men's golf team holds third place after the first two rounds of the 62nd annual Western Intercollegiate on Wednesday at Pasatiempo Golf Course. The final round tees off at 8 a.m. on Thursday on the par-70, 6,511-yard course.

Freshman Stephen Hale paced the Golden Bears, following up an opening round 73 (+3) with an even par 70 in the afternoon to finish the day at 143. The rookie had four birdies in the two rounds and added an eagle on the par-five, 527-yard 13th hole in the afternoon round.

Michigan State, ranked No. 25 in the nation, holds first place in the event with a two-round 567 (+7), followed by St. Mary's at 581 (+21). Cal holds third place at 585 (+25), just ahead of Colorado (586, +26) and UC Irvine (587, +27), who round out the top five.

After Hale, sophomore George Gandranata tallied a pair of 73's to finish at 146 (+6), tied for 10th. He had seven birdies on the day. Senior Brandon Beck also collected seven birdies and finished at 148 (+8), to tie for 20th place. Freshman Eric Mina matched Beck with a two-round 148, battling back from an opening round 77 to shoot a plus-one 71 in the second round.

The Golden Bears were at a disadvantage in the opening round as sophomore Evan Derian was forced to withdraw due to illness, giving Cal just four players in the five-count-four format. Derian did return for the second round, but still struggled, finishing with a 76.

Playing as individuals in the event from Cal were freshman Feldman Tan, who tallied a two-round 154 (+18) and sophomore Andrey Mindirgasov, who had a 158.
