Scouting the Golden Bears
With a promising group of rowers, Cal looks to get back into the national title hunt again this spring. The Bears, who last won the varsity eight IRA title in 2006, feature a strong senior class that will be pushed by a talented group of sophomores. The freshman eight hopes to maintain its spot high in the stands after placing in the top two each of the last five years. As with the freshman eight, the Cal freshman four and varsity four claimed their respective IRA crowns in 2007.
Among the veterans returning for Cal's 20th-year head coach Steve Gladstone are senior Marko Marjanovic, senior Charlie Smith and senior Gordon Getsinger. Marjanovic and Smith were members of the 2006 IRA varsity eight champion boat, while Getsinger rowed on the junior varsity eight that took fifth at the 2007 IRAs and second at the 2006 IRAs.
Gladstone and Bears frosh coach Geoff Bond have brought in a talented group of newcomers that includes Jovan Popovic. The freshman from Belgrade, Serbia, won a gold in the pair at the 2006 World Championships and took home a silver in the four along with Marjanovic in the 2007 World Championships.
2007 in Review
Ranked third in the nation entering the 2007 IRA Regatta, Cal wound up fifth in the varsity eight race at the competition in Camden, N.J. The Cal freshman four, varsity four and freshman eight won their respective national titles, while the Bears' second varsity eight took fifth. Cal finished in third place with 190 points in the overall team standings behind champion Washington, which also claimed the varsity eight title.
At the Pac-10 Championships, the Bears finished second to Washington despite Cal's victories in the varsity four and freshman eight races.
Cal Men's Crew History
The University of California and its men's rowing program were both founded in 1868, and crew thereby became the first sport at Cal. The Cal men's crew began its dominance of national and international rowing in earnest in 1924 with the hiring of Carrol ("Ky") Ebright as head coach. Over Ebright's leadership of 36 years, Cal crew became synonymous with Olympic gold medals and national collegiate championships.
Over the years, the Golden Bears have won gold medals representing the United States three times in the Olympic Games (in 1928, 1932 and 1948), more than any college or university in the world.
Ebright's crews also won a total of six Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) championships. Following Ebright, Jim Lemmon strung together an impressive streak as head coach that included winning three IRA championships and two Pacific Coast championships. Cal won its next IRA title in 1976 during Stephen Gladstone's first turn at the helm (1973-80). Cal also won the 1979 Pacific Coast championship, as the Golden Bears dominated West Coast rowing.
Gladstone returned for a second stint coaching the Bears in 1997 after many successful seasons at Brown. Charged with returning Cal men's crew to the upper echelon of collegiate rowing, Gladstone wasted no time as the varsity earned an IRA bronze in 1997 and 1998 and IRA gold in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2006. With the 2006 IRA championship, the Bears have won 15 IRA national championships, the second most behind Cornell (26).
