BERKELEY, CALIF. - Led by another outstanding pitching performance from sophomore right-hander Tyson Ross, the California baseball team upset No. 6-ranked Arizona State, 4-2, Friday in a Pac-10 contest at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears snapped the Sun Devils' 12-game winning streak and improved to 22-20 overall and 6-7 in the Pac-10. Arizona State dropped to 33-11 and 10-3 in conference play. Against a team coming into the game with a .359 team batting average, Ross evened his record to 5-5 by pitching 8.0 innings with seven hits, two runs, two walks and nine strikeouts.
Sophomore right-hander Matt Gorgen pitched the ninth inning (one hit, no runs, one strikeout) for Cal for his eighth save of the year. The losing pitcher for the Sun Devils was junior left-hander Josh Satow (9-3, 6.0 innings, six hits, four runs, two earned runs, three walks, six strikeouts).
The Bears started the day's scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman center fielder Brett Jackson led off with a single and advanced to third base on sophomore catcher Charlie Cutler's double down the first base line. Jackson then scored when sophomore first baseman David Cooper had an RBI groundout to shortstop. ASU quickly tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the second inning when Ike Davis hit a lead-off home run to right field off of Ross.
Cal regained the lead with a run in the third inning. With two outs, junior second baseman Josh Satin walked, stole second base and later advanced to third base on a Satow wild pitch. Cooper registered his second RBI when he dumped a single over Sun Devil first baseman Brett Wallace's head.

ASU tied the contest, 2-2, in the top of the fourth inning on a fielder's choice RBI by Matt Spence, scoring Eric Sogard, who had led-off the inning with a single to right field. The Bears broke the deadlock with two unearned runs in the fifth inning. Jackson led-off with a single, and was safe at second when Sun Devil shortstop Andrew Romine dropped a potential double play ball after Wallace had fielded a hard-hit ground by Cutler. With runners at first and second base, Satin knocked an RBI single to center, scoring Jackson. Junior first baseman Mike Van Winden later plated Cutler with an RBI groundout to first baseman Wallace.
Jackson had two hits on the day for the Bears, and Cooper notched a pair of RBI. Davis had a single, double and home run for the Sun Devils.
The Bears will next host Arizona State in the second game of the three-game Pac-10 series, Saturday, Apr. 28 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
