2008 Pac-10 Championships
February 27 - March 1
Long Beach, CA
Lauren Rogers - 100 yard Backstroke
Rogers continued to assault the Cal record books in the 100 back with her first-place finish of 51.80 - the second-fastest mark in program history and lifetime best. Earlier in the afternoon, Rogers recorded the fastest preliminary time of 52.83 - now the fourth-fastest time in school history. Rogers now owns four of the top 10 fastest marks in the 100 back in school history. Not to go unnoticed, this was Rogers' second consecutive win in the 100 back at the conference championships, besting last year's time of 53.48.
Lauren Rogers - 200 yard Backstroke
Rogers simply just turned it on in the final 50 yards of the 200 back with a scorching split time of 28.99 to hold off Arizona's Andrea Boritzke, who touched the wall .15 seconds after Rogers. The 1:55.53 first-place finish by Rogers was not only a lifetime best, but the third-fastest time in school history. Rogers, who practically rewrote the record book in the 100 back this season, now has her name prominently displayed three times in the top 10 finishes of the 200 back. Rogers' win was also the fourth time in the last eight years that a swimmer from Cal has won the 200 back at the conference championships.
400 yard Free-Relay
The other big highlight came in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the first-place foursome of Madison Kennedy, Hannah Wilson, Emily Silver and Dana Vollmer broke a Pac-10 meet record (set by the Bears last season) with a time of 3:13.22. Cal, who has won the 400 free relay three out of the last five years, eclipsed last year's foursome of Erin Reilly, Silver, Jessica Hardy and Vollmer's mark of 3:13.60.
Dana Vollmer - 100 yard Butterfly
Vollmer reaffirmed her status as Pac-10 royalty of the 100 fly with a first-place finish time of 51.25 - the fourth-fastest mark in school history. Vollmer, who won last year's Pac-10 100 fly at a record time of 50.80, owns the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth-fastest 100 fly times in school history. Standout senior Emily Silver (52.91) and freshman sensation Hannah Wilson (a personal-best 53.05) placed 4-5 in the 100 fly finals as well. The other dynamic freshman, Amanda Sims placed seventh with a time of 53.15.
Lauren Boyle - 1650 yard Freestyle
Boyle smashed the longstanding record, previously held by Sarah Anderson who swam the 1650 free in 16:10.33 back in 1988, by nearly seven seconds at 16:03.51, and two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Elizabeth Durot from Stanford. Boyle really separated herself from the pack in the 11th 50-yard split at a blistering 29.07 clip. This was a lifetime best for Boyle, whose previous best in the 1650 was 16:23.98 at the U.S. Short Course National Championships in Atlanta on Nov. 29. Boyle's victory also signified the fist time since 1989 (Anderson) that Cal has won the 1650 free at the conference championships.
